“The slightest sketch of a pencil may just mean the world. Those scribbles, even whenunrecognisable, are full of joy and enthusiasm. And they can change somechildren’s life.

Glifo The Custom-Made Writing Aid

At 3DEXPERIENCE World 2021, in the 3DEXPERIENCE Lab, we heard from Enrico Bassi, Fab Lab Director and Manager of the FabLab in Milan, sharing the story of Glifo.

OpenDot FabLab provides a space for making and learning new things. They use technology and co-design to accelerate innovative processes that have a positive impact on companies, universities and public administrations.

Glifo is a 3D printed custom aid that helps children with disabilities achieve autonomy in writing and drawing.

It allows people who suffer from cerebral and physical disorders to write and draw freely, without the help of parents and therapists.

Glifo is a lightweight, customizable and tailor-made writing tool that has been developed to help change somechildren’s lives.

The idea ofGlifo was borntohelp children with a complex neurological disorder write and draw so that they could leave their marks.

A need brought up by the therapists of Together To Go, an incredible foundation that takes care of more than a hundred children with complex neurological disease, for free, every year.

The therapists witnessed how important it was for children to engage in these activities like their schoolmates did, and even more if they could do it autonomously.

Glifo was created in response to a specific need: that of having a functional handle that takes into account the motor difficulties of a child with complex neurological pathology to be able to write and draw independently.

There are other accessible aids on the market but most are not usually attractive, the cost is prohibitive and they don’t always satisfy the user’s needs.

Joining Forces

Thats when the OpenDot and TOG (Together To Go) Foundationjoined forces.

It was back in 2014 when the first Glifo was developed as the result of an intense collaborative process by makers, designers, rehabilitation experts, therapists, students, and families of children with neurological disorders.

The outcome was a functional, low-cost, accessible, beautiful, and therefore inclusive solution that, thanks to 3D printing, could be tailor-made for each child.

“From a medical point of view, we knew it needed to focus on the back of the hand, reducing the contraction of the limb. But it also needed to be also easy to use, nice to look at, suitable for use at school and at home, and most importantly tailor-made to suit each user”

Cristina Dornini, TOG Foundation, Therapist Coordinator

Designing Glifo

Pen holders for children with disabilities exist already, but on average, theyre heavier, less colorful, adjustable (not custom made) and hold the pen in the palm of your hand.

These features satisfy the larger category of people but are less effective in some cases such as TOGs young guests.

Some of Glifos features have the sole purpose to make it feel like it belongs to a specific person, making them feel important and unique. Its a choice that makes production harder, but the solution way more effective.

The designers went through three different designs before they were satisfied with the end result.

Custom Made to Fit the Need of Every Kid

“But it is not enough to have a great product, so far every family has to come to us to check dimensions to get the perfect customized Glifo, we want to change this and make it easier” Enrico Bassi, Fab Lab Director.

OpenDot FabLab together with TOG Foundation recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the new design of Glifo (lighter, smaller, easier to use), as well as the development of an online configurator that will enable anyone to personalize their own Glifo from home.

“With this campaign, we aim to raise fundingto develop an online configurator that will enable anyone to make their own Glifo, tailored to their specific needs and taste.”

The online configurator will allow people to choose the correct dimensions, tilt, and colour using a simple and accessible online interface. They will even give it a name to make it feel like part of the family.

With the configurator, everyone can create, download or receive their own Glifo without leaving their own home.

The latest design is lighter, smaller, easier to use, and capable of holding more types and sizes of pens, pencils, and markers to let kids choose how they channel their creativity.

A simple and practical tool designed thanks tomodern 3D printing services, that allow OpenDot to affordably print Glifo and make it available almost everywhere in the world.

All of the help received is being used to create the configurator and also allow OpenDot and TOG to donate Glifo to those who cannot afford it. Through the Kickstarter campaign, people can donate Glifo to foundation associations and schools that had no chance to buy it themselves and even hospitals working withkids who will benefit from it.

How DriveWorks is Supporting GLIFO

FabLab OpenDotand TOG believe everyone who needs a custom made Glifo should be able to easily create, personalise, and have their own printed without leaving home.

Enrico shares “To actually make this possible, we had to use biometric designs, of course, we went through different software and in the end, we found out the best one was SOLIDWORKS.”.

After getting started with SOLIDWORKS, the team were then introduced to DriveWorks.

When OpenDot realised how many things were possible using professional tools and online configurators as powerful as DriveWorks, they realised that biometric design has so many potentials when it comes to designing things for people with disability, and for people who use things to interact with the world in a different way from everyone else.

The DriveWorks team have been extremely proud to get involved with the project and help support OpenDot and TOG use DriveWorks software for creating a Glifo custom configurator.

Our team have been working closely with Enrico and the team of makers and designers at OpenDot to support them in creating an online configurator that offers all of the functionality that is needed to make Glifo as personal to the individual as possible.

“We managed to bring the idea a step closer to reality after being introduced to the amazing team at DriveWorks”Enrico Bassi.

A recent update from the OpenDot team lets us know that they aim to have the configurator ready by the beginning of March. From that moment they will start delivering all of the Glifo donated to kids as well as associations, schools and hospitals.

Supporting the Future of Digital

This past year we have seen more than ever the importance of digital. Digital is part of our day to day lives and in everything we do.

As a company, were committed to supporting educationandinvesting in the future of digital

We work closely with students and academia to help support and nurture the future of STEM, enabling students to gain the right skills and knowledge they need to succeed in STEM careers.

The Pledge has been providing opportunities for students tolearn and grow digitally and were proud to be a part of it!

As a software development company, we have a lot of insight and knowledge to share.

Last week, we took part in a project aimed at getting young people into digital, supported by The Pledge, Cheshire and Warrington.

The event was called Girls in Computing and the aim was to get more younger students, particularly girls, thinking about taking computing and digital-related options at GSCE.

We spent three days with students from Ellesmere Port Catholic High School, to teach them about the variety of careers in digital and help them complete a design challenge that they would then present back to the team.

The week was full of learning and we had lots of fun working with the girls.

Introducing DriveWorks

Bridie from theDriveWorks teamstarted the week off byintroducing DriveWorksand thesoftware that we create.

After being introduced to the week and learning more about the type of things we get up to at a digital company like DriveWorks, the girls weredivided into two teamsandgiven a brief;

To create a customizable environmentally friendly product.

Before attempting the brief the teams worked through a series ofmini communicationtasks to get them working together.

The students then began brainstorming some ideas and coming up with their own unique product.

Hearing from the Team

The students heard from different members of the DriveWorks team, all working in various areas of the company, talking through their roles and responsibilities.

Learning About Product Design

First to speak to the students was Sophie.

Sophie is on placement with DriveWorks while studying Product Design at The University of Leeds.

While speaking to the girls Sophie, shared a bit about her education and how she got into her current role at DriveWorks. Sophie showed the students some of the projects she had been working on during university and what she has been working on at DriveWorks.

Sophie shared some top tips and important things for the students to consider when deciding and designing their own customizable products.

Being a Software Developer

On day two of the event, the girls were introduced to Lauren, a Software Developer at DriveWorks.

The students heard how Lauren ended up becoming a Software Developer and what she enjoys most about her role at DriveWorks.

Lauren shared how it’s really important to be passionate about what you do, whatever career path you take.

Marketing a Product

Finally, Lucy from the Marketing team demonstrated the importance of marketing in the digital world.

Speaking about her education and how she got into marketing, Lucy pointed out that you do not have to be technical to work at a digital company.

Lucy showed the students the many techniques and tools we use to deliverconsistent and effective marketing campaigns to our global network.

Throughout the session, Lucy suggested things for the teams to consider when designing and presenting their products back to the group. Pointing out key things like the importance of identifying the target audience and also considering the best way to market their products.

From each diverse presentation, the students learned about thevariety of rolesand skillsets required in a successful digital company.

It also gave them a further understanding of the importance of teamwork and communication within a digital company and how we all work together to achieve one goal;to create innovative and exciting software.

With this new wealth of knowledge, the students got to work on their final presentations.

Working together over Microsoft Teams, the girls had to not only design an innovative product but also think about how they would market their product in a way that sets it out from the crowd – considering any limitations of taking the product to market.

Following the brief, the students thought about all of the ways in which they could make their products customizable and also sustainable. With the DriveWorks team ready to answer any questions or help if the teams needed it.

Product Presentations

On Day Three of the week, the teams presented their ideas.

We saw some amazing concepts including a customizable skateboard made out of recycled materials to make it sustainable.

There was a customizable pillow that you could have in any shape with any design printed on it. We also saw a Shino-Matic 9000 – a light that would project whatever you wanted on the wall and some customizable LED trainers that could light up in any colour!

Both teams worked hard to develop these ideas, creating brand names and logos to fit in with the company ethos, also thinking about the sort of materials these products could be made from to keep them sustainable.

We heard about each product’s target audience and how the teams planned to market their products.

At the end of the week, we were really proud to congratulate the studentsfor all the hard work they had done during the event.

We were joined by DriveWorks VP & Co-Founder, Maria Sarkar, who presented each of them with their own certificate, designed by Sophie.

The event was a great success and the feedback from all the students and their teacher reflected this.

Having worked with this inspiring group of students, were excited to see the future of digital!

We look forward to welcoming the girls to the DriveWorks office when we can, so they can meet even more of the DriveWorks and continue their learning.

Wanting to pursue a career in digital?

Were always on the lookout for talented people to join our team.

Pancake Day Celebrations

Its our yearly tradition at DriveWorks that on Pancake Day we fill our office break out area with pancake mix, lots of delicious topping and flying pancakes

In previous years, we’ve had lots of fun taking it in turns to pour out our pancake mix and have a go at flipping the pancake as high as possible.

Last Pancake Day our tasty range of toppings included all our favourites lemon and sugar, chocolate spread, golden syrup, maple syrup, whipped cream, cinnamon sugar and fresh berries!

We saw many different styles of frying, flipping and throwing. All flips were successful with no dropped pancakes insight – to Ruby’s disappointment!

Pancake Day at Home

While this year we couldn’t all get together in the office for our usual Pancake Day fun – the team still enjoyed lots of delicious pancakes at home and shared some pictures of their attempts!

Celebrating 20 Years of DriveWorks

This year we are celebrating an amazing 20 years of DriveWorks!

For the last 20 years, weve marked 1st February on the calendar as the official day when DriveWorks software first came to market.

Since 2001, theres been lots and lots of development, as weve worked hard to anticipate and respond to user suggestions, and to take advantage of new and emerging technologies.

It adds up to making our celebration a celebration of continuous innovation and automation.

DriveWorks was founded in 2001 whenGlen Smith, mechanical engineer, automation advocate and SOLIDWORKS 3D Evangelist saw the opportunity to create a productivity tool for automating designs created in SOLIDWORKS.

That’s when he asked Maria, also a SOLIDWORKS enthusiast and business development specialist to work with him and Take DriveWorks to Market., creating DriveWorks, a design automation software tool to automate SOLIDWORKS, the leading 3D CAD design package.

Since then, our team has grown and we’ve developed three DriveWorks software products; DriveWorksXpress, DriveWorks Solo, and DriveWorks Pro.

They are used for design automation, product configuration, business process automation and as a CPQ, sales configurator solution.

DriveWorks software is used by businesses of all sizes, in a wide range of industries and market sectors across the globe. We’ve established an international network of over 100 Value-Added Resellers, across 51 countries, who sell and support our software internationally.

Our Technology

During these 20 years, the many members of the DriveWorks team have worked hard to deliver our award-winning software.

We’re proud to have delivered 18 major software releases with multiple Service Packs so far.

Each release offering new features and even more functionality for our customers.

Over the past 2 decades, technology has changed considerably, something that we’ve embraced and adapted to with our own technology.

During this time there have been huge advances that have changed the future of digital.

In January 2007, Steve Jobs announced the iPhone and it was released in June of that year. In September 2008, Google Chrome was launched.

In April 2010 the first iPad was launched and in 2014, VR rapidly gained momentum as more people started exploring the possibilities of VR.

By recognising new innovations that are changing the technology world, it allows for us here at DriveWorks to take our own technology to the next level as we implement new innovations into our own software.

Everyone here at DriveWorks is incredibly dedicated to creating great, innovative software for our customers all over the world.

The collaborative work-spaces we have created and our company culture all foster innovation. Its at the heart of everything we do.

Our Success

Another milestone in our technology was in 2007 when SOLIDWORKS announced at SolidWorks World, that DriveWorksXpress would beincluded in every license of SOLIDWORKS.

Over the years our relationship with SOLIDWORKS has grown and we are proud to be a SOLIDWORKS Gold Certified Partner andthe chosen design automation solution for SOLIDWORKS.

Based on this trust, DriveWorksXpress, DriveWorks Solo and DriveWorks Pro are all SOLIDWORKS Gold Partner Products and we have built strong links with the entire SOLIDWORKS Community.

We have also been recognised as a Microsoft Gold Partner for Application Development and our products are Windows 10 compatible and fully supported by us.

In 2019, we were recognised locally withtwo High Sheriffs Awards, forInnovation and Export.

The awards are the regionsmost prestigious awardsfor business performance.

The Export award recognised our significant growth in international business through a clear commitment to the development of new export market opportunities.

While the Innovation award recognised our ability to create, nurture and develop new products.

In the same year, we were also recognised with the highest accolade available to UK businesses, theQueens Awards for Enterprise.

The Queens Awards recognise businesses for outstanding achievement and we are honoured to have received two awards, for Innovation and for International Trade.

OnFriday 6th September, we held our Queens Award presentation and Digital Technology & Automation Open Day at our corporate headquarters in Thelwall, Warrington.
