Why Use Design Automation?

Companies offering custom products are often putting their engineers under pressure. They’re squeezed to create proposal documents and drawings as fast as possible. This leads to best guess costings, for orders that aren’t guaranteed.

Engineering departments are wasted on tasks that could be automated. They have less time to re-engineer existing designs, update drawings and carefully check every detail. Jobs are then left open to errors, rework, backlogs and delays. All of this can affect profit margins and damage reputation.

By automating time-sensitive and often repetitive upfront activities, you will reap the benefits. You have more time to innovate and add value to your products, improving your position in the market. You increase throughput and improve quality, enabling you to win more business.

Design Automation and Knowledge Capture

Design practices often evolve through years of industry experience. Companies need capture and re-use the combined knowledge of their most experienced engineers. However, storing and sharing this knowledge with others is difficult.

Inside 3D CAD systems, expert users can add geometric relationships and equation-driven dimensions. This saves time but issues arise when making changes, or adding additional products. Unravelling the complex design references created by others is difficult and time-consuming.

DriveWorks uses a different approach, simple and straightforward rules and decision logic. You can easily capture and reuse your design, manufacturing and cost knowledge to truly automate your business.

Mike Puckett, Senior Manager, Worldwide Certification Program, SOLIDWORKS

Earlier this month we caught up with Mike Puckett, Senior Manager, Worldwide Certification Program, SOLIDWORKS.

We chatted to Mike about his background, his first experiences of working in industry, the SOLIDWORKS Certifications Team and Mikes experience at past SOLIDWORKS/3DEXPERIENCE Worlds.

If you missed it catch up on Part One here.

The CSWP and CSWE event at SOLIDWORKS World/3DEXPERIENCE World are always the event to attend do you have one particular event that stands out as a favourite of yours?

“These events are always a lot of fun, and we try to switch things up every year or so. Its hard to choose just one as there are fun stories from every event that weve ever hosted.

The event that stands out the most for me is the last CSWP event that we hosted which was at SOLIDWORKS World 2012 in San Diego on the USS Midway. The program had grown so much, and we had a lot of people starting to reach the Expert level CSWE so we knew that there would be a change at future events.

At the CSWP event in San Diego, there were about 900 people (if not more) in attendance. There were so many people that attended that year that there were not many people in the Partner Pavilion that evening for the reception!

The CSWE event for 3DEXPERIENCE World 2021 will be a virtual event and we are planning to make it the most non-virtual virtual event possible (more on that later!)”

How do you feel that the current pandemic environment has shifted users working toward their certification?

“One of the biggest changes we made over the years was in 2006 when we moved our exams online to make access more universal compared to what we offered since 1999.

Since then, its been a remoteprogram and we achieved the program goal early on for it to run itself on a remote platform. Our dependency is mostly on making sure we have enough bandwidth supplied.

As far as the past year, we did see a small drop off in participation in certification activities early on in the Spring after 3DEXPERIENCE World in Nashville.

We knew that some companies were furloughing their employees and downsizing as a way to address what was happening in the world economy with the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the education space, schools had to quickly address the pandemic and shift to home/distance learning. I think it took both the commercial and educational space to get back up to speed with laptops and adjusting to this new working environment.

The challenging part of completing the certifications as a professional is having enough time during their day, as well as being in an environment without many distractions.

With people now working more at home, they can carve out time to take the exams. Our program numbers in the commercial area have been ok all things considered the education side of the program did drop in numbers earlier in the year but has leveled out.”

“The certification program continues to grow, and I give so much credit to my team on this success and growth. Weve started offering certification for the different roles available through the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform and are seeing more people participate in those.

As we begin 2021 we are set to issue the 500,000th certification.

Some other exciting numbers that Im happy to share are the number of 3DEXPERIENCE Works Portfolio Certifications that are being issued.

In 2020 we grew the number of certifications 132% reaching the 5,000 mark.

With plans to introduce exams for new roles that are being released this year, 2021 is set to be a big year for the certification program in regards to the 3DEXPERIENCE Works Portfolio.

We expect that with the vaccines becoming available that 2021 will be a significant year of growth for the certification program.”

What are the plans for the Certification Program at 3DEXPERIENCE World 2021?

“As you know, 3DEXPERIENCE World is being hosted as a virtual event for 2021. Certification Day is a big part of the event and is being held on Monday, February 8th (a change from historically being held on Sunday ahead of the conference)

In the past, we have been limited to how many people can physically participate in certifications at the event and weve had to host 2 sessions. Even with 2 sessions, we would only be able to accommodate about 350 people every year.

The virtual event allows us to include more people in the certification program. As of the first week of January, we have 1,000 people signed up to take a certification exam! (editors note: at the time of the interview w/ Mike in late December, there were 600 people registered and Mike joked about getting to 1,000 people)

What this year really comes down to is opportunity we are giving away the opportunity for SOLIDWORKS Certification at 3DEXPERIENCE World 2021.

Anyone that is registered for 3DEXPERIENCE World is entitled to some certifications for free the VIP option entitles people to additional ones.

Read more about Certification Day and what exams are available on the 3DEXPERIENCE World website.”

Mike, what can you share with us right now about the CSWE Event at this year’s 3DEXPERIENCE World?

“When we learned that 3DEXPERIENCE World 2021 was going to be a virtual event, we started our planning and working with the events team on details for both Certification Day and the CSWE event.

The events team are an amazing group of professionals and have worked so hard to create a successful event hats off to them!

Our goal for the CSWE event is to host the most non-virtual virtual event that we can possibly host.

The CSWE event will be a 2-hour long streaming event that will be held on Monday, February 8th from 2pm-4pm EST (with no venue to close, it could run even longer!)

We plan to have some special guests join us as well as some customers that will share their stories. Gian Paolo Bassi may join us and who knows he may show us his favourite cocktail recipe.

We are finishing up all of the details to make this a fun event in this virtual environment.”

“We are already looking to next year and planning for 3DEXPERIENCE World 2022 as a real live and in-person event!”

It was a pleasure speaking with Mike, learning more about the success of SOLIDWORKS Certifications, the effect the pandemic has had on certifications and what we can look forward to at 3DEXPERIENCE World 2021 and the future of certifications!

The ongoing global pandemic has sparked a huge push todigital.

In August 2020, we spoke about how COVID-19 has accelerated Digital Transformation. Noting that the pandemic has dramatically sped up digital transformation, with companies not only wanting to embrace digital but needing to in order stay agile, efficient and resilient.

Forbes reports that although in the early days of the pandemic manufacturers were hit hard with forced shutdowns, production slowdowns and serious questions about whether companies could navigate the disruptions. What did increase in 2020, was the speed of transformation.

Companies made swift moves towards Industry 4.0, or the ongoing automation of traditional manufacturing and industrial practices.

The pandemic has transformed the way we work, impacted every industry, and changed the direction of business strategies for many. Businesses are now looking at ways to work smarter, save money and survive.

But the pandemic has not slowed innovation – if anything, it has been amplified!

As organisations across all industries ready themselves for the next phase, Microsoft believes their focus will be on strengthening business resilience and agility, and at the heart of this will be the willingness to embrace new technology.

Advancing Technology and Innovation

Technology is always changing and improving. Things that were previously thought to be impossible are now being made possible at a very fast pace.

We have seen a shift where digital is a key part of every interaction.

Emerging technologies are reimagining how we organise, operate, and strategise.

Cox Blue state ‘the rate at which technology trends evolve can be daunting for any business owner. It seems at times, that almost as quickly as a company adopts new technology, its outdated, or a new version or product has already launched to take its place.’

Technology is advancing at a rate never seen before.

We are frequently seeing new innovative trends that are helping us work more efficiently, communicate with consumers and seize new opportunities.

As Medium suggests, with new trends constantly emerging, keeping up to date can be tricky for anyone. But staying on top of the new technologies shaping your industry is essential for driving innovation, accomplishing business goals, and remaining competitive.

“Stayingcurrent withtechnology willprepareyour businessfor changing consumer demands and expectations.Keeping upwith these trendswillincreaseyourrelevancy and customer appeal, whichwillset you apart fromthe competition.” – Cox Blue.

The Importance of Keeping Up with Technology

Technology will continue to advance and customers will find new and exciting ways to use it, Axis Technical group notes.

It is crucial for businesses to follow new emerging tech trends, understand them and take advantage of them in order to succeed.

In todays rapidly transforming business world that is driven by digital, there can be major consequences for businesses that fail to move with the times. There are many examples of this to name just a couple.

Eastman Kodak were once the worlds biggest film company. It was a Kodak electrical engineer who invented the first digital camera in 1975. Kodak held back from developing digital cameras for the mass market for fear of eradicating its all-important film business. Kodak filed for bankruptcy in 2012. Later re-emerging as a smaller company in 2013. With the management of Kodak so focused on the success of film, they missed the opportunity of this digital revolution that would change the photography industry.

Another example, home movie and video game rental services giantBlockbuster Video, arguably one of the most iconic brands in the video rental space. In 2000, Netflix proposed a partnership with Blockbuster, for Blockbuster to advertise Netflix in-store and let them run Blockbuster online. The CEO at the time, John Antioco turned this down. Netflix offered something new, instead of charging to rent videos and adding fines for late return, Netflix offered subscriptions to customers. This business model proved to be very disruptive.

Later, Antioco proposed the idea of discontinuing the fees that annoyed customers and invest heavily in a digital platform, however, the cost of this would amount to $400 million which was deemed too damaging to the companies profitability. 5 years later, in 2010 Blockbuster filed for bankruptcy. In 2019, Netflix was a $28 billion-dollar company.

If companies fail to keep up with technology and stay one step ahead of the game, they risk missing new opportunities for the business, falling behind and even becoming irrelevant.

How DriveWorks Keep Up with Technology

At DriveWorks we are continually keeping an eye on what’s happening in the industry, from new innovative technology to tech trends that are emerging.

At the rate technology is advancing, we see now more than ever how important it is to adapt and be responsive.

The internet is a great resource, giving us access to everything. There are many tech websites that report on trending topics. You can read blogs, visit forums or listen to podcasts to get the latest tech news. Social media is another tool that is important to see what people in the industry are talking about.

Every year we attend industry tradeshows and events where we meet a wide variety of people from all parts of the manufacturing and technology sectors.

Although due to the pandemic this year has been a bit different. These types of events are great to see what technology companies are showing and what everyone is talking about. Many of these events are now virtual, giving us all more opportunities to attend and learn. We’ll be at this year’s virtual 3DEXPERIENCE World with a team of experts live on our booth throughout the event. It’s free to attend – sign up and chat with us on our booth.

The DriveWorks team are innovative and always looking for ways to make our software the best it can be. We work hard to keep our knowledge up to date and be agile. We understand that technology does not stand still and that we must continually evolve as the world around us does.

A Week of Learning, Networking and Sharing Ideas

Every year we host our own annual technical training event, DriveWorks World.

DriveWorks World brings together DriveWorks users from all around the world for a week of learning, networking and sharing knowledge.

During the event, whether it be in person or digital, we share Whats New in the latest release of DriveWorks software anddeliver hands-on learning and advanced sessions.

The sessions cover lots of different topics at a variety of skill levels. The sessions range from core topics such as rules, 3D, workflow, design automation, but also include looking at newer trends such as 3D printing, CPQ, the cloud, business process automation and digital transformation.

It’s also a valuable opportunity for us to speak to our customers in industry to learn from them and gain their feedback!

Mike Puckett, Senior Manager, Worldwide Certification Program, SOLIDWORKS

Did you know that more than half of the DriveWorks team have achieved Certified SOLIDWORKS Associate or Certified SOLIDWORKS Professional status?

We even have a few members of our team that are at the Certified SOLIDWORKS Expert level!

Needless to say, the team at DriveWorks are a bunch of power SOLIDWORKS users and have embraced the opportunity to achieve their certifications in SOLIDWORKS over the years.

It was great to have a chance to sit down recently with Mike Puckett, Senior Manager of the Worldwide Certification Program at SOLIDWORKS.

Lets hear what Mike has to share about his path to SOLIDWORKS, the Certification Program, and of course 3DEXPERIENCE World 2021!

Mike, its great to have you join us and share some of your story. It would be great if you could share a bit about yourself and your path to SOLIDWORKS.

“Thanks, happy to share. Believe it or not, when I graduated high school in 1990, I was interested in a career in criminal justice.

After taking some time off following high school, I completed 3 semesters at the local community college and had started looking at applying for work with local law enforcement in the area (Mike is from Southern California).

Unfortunately, around that time the economy shifted as we headed into a recession. This meant government budgets were trimmed, and jobs cut so there was not much opportunity.

My father worked in the Tool and Die industry and had worked for years in a local shop.

He suggested that I get together and speak with the owner of the shop to see about getting a job working there.

The owner, Don, had a firm belief that talent was inherent and because my father was so talented in this trade that I would also bring the same level of talent.

Starting around 1995 I was working in this shop and running EDM Machines.I learned a lot about the trade and most of what I know about plastics injection moulding I stayed there for about 3 years.

After some time, my father (who I referred to as John while working) suggested that I should find work elsewhere to simply get more experience and learn more in the industry.”

“Taking my fathers advice – I went to work in another shop that was a competitor to the shop where I had been working.

My boss at this shop, George, would go on to be one of my professional mentors in life (my father being another).

George taught me so much about EDM and installed a strong work ethic in me.

It was during this time of working with George that I started to pay attention to the folks that worked in the design department. They worked in another part of the building, dressed differently, and had a different workday than those of us on the shop floor.

Id had a bit of interest in computers and design myself, so I decided that I was going to take an 8-week course in AutoCAD (this was around 1999). The design department had SOLIDWORKS, and I remember sitting down one afternoon and working through some of the SOLIDWORKS tutorials and learning what I could do with this 3D technology.

Needless to say, I didnt do any additional work in AutoCAD after learning SOLIDWORKS. In my efforts to learn even more about SOLIDWORKS, I took a weekend course in SOLIDWORKS I also found a book on SOLIDWORKS written by Marie and David Planchard!”

“After learning SOLIDWORKS, I took on a few roles in my job that allowed me to put these new skills to work. At one point I was taking 2D drawings and converting them to 3D in order to inspect them in our CMM.

It was really great for me to watch the design to manufacturing process. Over time I took on more of a role in mould design after my boss George bought my former employers business (where my father worked).

Being such a fan of SOLIDWORKS, I started the Southern California SOLIDWORKS User Group after a discussion with Richard Doyle at a SWUG Summit event. As user group leader, I would also meet Jeremy Luchini, who was in charge of the SOLIDWORKS Certification Program at the time.

Jeremy was looking to hire someone for this team and when I applied for the position, I was forthcoming in that I had no formal engineering education. Everything I had learned was from experience and taking a few weekend classes.

Not only was I hired, but I also started in January of 2009 and was able to attend my first SOLIDWORKS World as a member of the certification team.

Im so proud to say that in 2021 I will be starting my 13th year with SOLIDWORKS!

Over my time at SOLIDWORKS, Ive only been with the certification team (he says jokingly) when I think about the only other roles that may be more fun, I think perhaps Marie Planchards role, or of course CEO

Mike, whos currently part of the Certification Team?

“Ive got a great team thats made of people that are the best at what they do in their respective product areas.

My team is made up of Avellino Rochino (CAD), Daniel Granillo (PDM), and Yannick Chaigneau (Simulation) while Id love to hire another person, this team is amazing and has built such a strong foundation for years to come!”

How many SOLIDWORKS World (3DEXPERIENCE World) events have you attended?

“This year will be the 16th year attending the event. The very first SOLIDWORKS World that I attended was held in Las Vegas in 2006 where I attended as a customer.

When I joined the certification team in January of 2009, I wasnt sure if I would be able to attend as I had just been hired and most travel arrangements were already planned and in place.

When talking to Jeremy, I was ready to take time off and pay my own way (of course Jeremy made sure I was able to attend as part of the certification team!)

SOLIDWORKS World/3DEXPERIENCE World is the busiest week of the year for my team, but its also by far the most enjoyable.

The one thing about this event is that just a week after the event is over, we already start our planning for the next year.

Im going to really miss the in-person event this year, but we are working to make the best of it with virtual 3DEXPERIENCE World 2021.”

Mike, having attended for so many years, do you have a favourite SOLIDWORKS World/3DEXPERIENCE World location?

“There are two events that stand out for me over the years. My favourite location for this event has been San Diego for SOLIDWORKS World 2008 it was a great location, and the block party was so much fun.

However, my most memorable event was SOLIDWORKS World 2010 which was held in Anaheim, California.

At the time, my boss (Jeremy Luchini) had both my colleague Avellino and I speak on the Main Stage during General Session for the very first time to talk about certification.

He told us there are only about 10 people that will appear on the main stage this year, you will be 2 of them. He then went on to tell us how it will help us grow in the company and to really embrace this opportunity.

Having grown up in Southern California, I invited my parents to attend the event on the day I was speaking.

My mother and father were seated in the front rows and it was a really proud moment for me to be speaking at this large industry event and to have my parents in the audience to see it.

Also Im still not sure if my mom was more excited to see me or Preston Hagmans father (actor Larry Hagman) sitting in front of her!”

Do you have a favourite keynote speaker from any of these events youve attended?

“Yes, Id have to say that my favourite speaker(s) were Gene Krantz and Jim Lovell, heroes of the Apollo 13 mission. They spoke during General Session at SOLIDWORKS World 2011, San Antonio, Texas.

It was great to hear them speak and to hear them tell the story of the history of the space race in their own words. To imagine what it must have been like to face the challenges they had and what they were able to do. To learn of the sacrifices that people made in order to move the program forward was inspiring.

What I came away with was the idea that in many parts of our lives, we do things because we are paid to do them; they did things because it was the right thing to do.

It was inspiring and I try to run my own team with the same idea that we are not going to do the easy stuff, its going to be hard and were going to need imagination and creativity but when we complete the work we will be glad we did it that way.

There’s More to Come

It was a pleasure speaking with Mike, to learn more about his background, the SOLIDWORKS Certifications Team and Mike’s experience at past SOLIDWORKS/3DEXPERIENCE Worlds.

Stay tuned for Part 2 of our interview with Mike, where Mike will be sharing more about 3DEXPERIENCE World 2021 and the certification program.

Catching with Simge Akarsu, Senior Strategy & Program Manager at Dassault Syst竪mes

Earlier this month we caught up with Simge Akarsu, Senior Strategy & Program Manager at Dassault Syst竪mes.

It was great to talk to Simge and learn more about her education, industry experience and the path that lead her to SOLIDWORKS.

If you missed it, catch up with Part 1 of our interview here.

“Ive attended SOLIDWORKS World (and 3DEXPERIENCE World) since 2012, so 9 years!”

Simge, we ALL have a favourite what has your favourite locale been for this event so far?

“Thats easy – SOLIDWORKS World 2012 in San Diego. It was amazing to be there and it was both my 1st and my favourite!”

Do you have a favourite keynote speaker?

We love being a part of the SOLIDWORKS Community!

This leading industry event brings together members of the engineering and manufacturing community from all over the world in an effort to educate, connect and network with each other.

Whilst we cannot be together in person this year, we are excited about being a part of this first-ever virtual event!

Recently, we had a chance to catch up with Simge Akarsu, Senior Strategy & Program Manager at Dassault Syst竪mes.

It was inspiring to listen to her story and how she has applied both education and experience to grow into the roles that she has had in industry over the years.

Now, shes responsible for creating a fun and engaging 3DEXPERIENCE World virtual event that promises to be exciting and keep everyone connected on a global level.

Simge, thanks for taking the time out of your (very) busy schedule to sit down with us. I think it would be great if you could share with everyone some background on where you are from and your education?

“Thanks, absolutely happy to share. This coming year, 2021, I will celebrate working for SOLIDWORKS for 10 years.

Its the longest (working) relationship Ive ever had. Currently, I am living in the Boston area, but I am originally from Istanbul, Turkey. My early education and university education are from Istanbul University where I received both my Bachelors Degree in Journalism as well as my Masters Degree in Communications.

As my formal education was in journalism, my first job was working for a newspaper in Turkey.

After some time, I realised that I wanted to do something more to help people communicate, market, and promote their products. When speaking with one of my professors, they recommended that I take on an internship with a large company in Turkey.”

“In this role, my manager was a very strong woman and I learned so much from working with her.

She had a big impact on my professional development; we are still in touch and I think of her from time to time.

Shortly after this, I found a job working with a company in the cutting tool industry – Taegutec.

As a young woman, I had to learn a lot of new technologies that I wasnt familiar with, but I was able to get up to speed very quickly.

There were not a lot of women working in the cutting tool industry.I often found myself to be the only woman at some of the trade events we attended.

After working at Taegutec for a bit, I decided to create my own business (SMG Company) and provide marketing consulting for some of my former employers as well as the SOLIDWORKS reseller, Yenasoft.

Over time, I built a relationship with Yenasoft and in 2009 I joined their team as the Marketing Manager.

While working at Yenasoft, I met the sales and marketing leadership team at SOLIDWORKS.”

The path to SOLIDWORKS

“In 2011, I accepted a position with SOLIDWORKS as the Marketing Specialist for Turkey. I loved the people that I was working with and I was starting to meet people from around the world in sales and marketing.

Within my 1st year with the company things were going really well, I became a manager and they expanded my role to include Greece, MENA, and South Africa.

When I was approached to interview for a technical Product Manager position that would be based in Boston I really needed to give this thought. Not only had I not planned a move to the USA, but I also didnt have a formal technical background.

After traveling to Boston for the interview, things moved pretty quickly and in March 2017 I accepted the offer for the position of Product Manager for e-Drawings. This was a new, challenging technical position for me as I had a background in marketing and communication. Needless to say, this was different.

Being a very driven person, I decided that I wanted to learn more about the software in order to do the best job that I could as a Product Manager. While it wasnt required of me, I pursued my Certified SOLIDWORKS Associate and I am proud to say that I achieved this in 2017.”

“In 2018, I was offered the position of Strategy & Program Manager.

Once again, I found myself in a role that was going to challenge me professionally.

Having worked for SOLIDWORKS for some time, I knew that I was going to be able to do my job well as I knew many people in the business and would be working with them on SOLIDWORKS World/3DEXPERIENCE World.

With my desire to be well educated and prepared for my new professional challenge, I took it upon myself to enroll and completed courses at both Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Certificate in Management & Leadership) and Harvard Business School (Managing Sales Team & Distribution Channels).”

Simge, give us some insight into this role of Strategy & Program Manager

“Sure, my current role as Senior Strategy & Program Manager is a very challenging and incredibly rewarding position.

My role allows me the opportunity to work with people from all areas of the business in an effort to manage, support and grow this annual event and make it the best it can be.

In this position, I am the person responsible for everything to do with the 3DEXPERIENCE World event.

If anyone has any questions about the event or requires any details on something happening with the event, I am the go to person.

We have a great team of both internal and external stakeholders that I am proud to be working with for this years event.

Its exciting to have everyone working together to help define, plan and of course successfully execute the event.

Once the event is over, we will review the results in an effort to make changes and then start our planning for the next year. For me, this is a year-round full-time position!”

There’s More to Come

It was a pleasure speaking to Simge, about her education, experience in industry and the path that led her to SOLIDWORKS.

Continue the reading our interview withSimge, where Simge will be sharing more about her role and involvement with 3DEXPEIRENCE World and what to expect from this year’svirtual 3DEXPERIENCE World!

FRC 4905 Get Ahead with DriveWorks Solo

In 2020, FRC 4905 Andromeda Oneused DriveWorks Solo to configure and design the initial drive train for their competition robot.

Andromeda One created a DriveWorks Solo configurator that allowed them to choose from a set of parameters including length, depth, height, gearbox, gear ratios and wheel types.

The FRC team make the selections and DriveWorks Solo creates the models based on the options selected.

The CAD models are completed sooner, meaning that the hardware team could get started on building the drive train earlier in the build season giving Andromeda One a head start on other teams.
