Pancake Day at DriveWorks

With 3 mixing bowls full of batter, a selection of yummy toppings and an eager team waiting to make, flip and eat some pancakes – we had a very busy lunch yesterday!

The Toppings

This year our delicious range of toppings included all our favourites – lemon and sugar, chocolate spread, golden syrup, maple syrup, whipped cream, cinnamon sugar and fresh berries!

The Frying

The Flipping

The flips started off low…

Then got higher…

And more confident…

The Final Outcome

Sadly, not everyone got a pancake…

Ruby was keeping a keen eye out for any dropped pancakes but unfortunately for her, every single one was caught!

We still made sure she got her favourite tennis ball and a lot of attention!

A New Era of SOLIDWORKS Events

For the past 19 years the team at DriveWorks have attended SOLIDWORKS World.

This year we were excited to join World as it entered a new era – 3DEXPERIENCE World.

Before heading out to Nashville, the DriveWorks 3DEXPERIENCE World team took the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform Explorer Associate Certification to learn more about the platform.

They were proud to display their 3DEXPERIENCE Platform Explorer Associate ribbons on their lanyards during the event!

See a round up of our time at 3DEXPERIENCE World 2020!

The 3DEXPERIENCE Playground

Set up in the 3DEXPERIECE Playground, we spent most of our time on our booth where we had lots of people stopping by through each day. It was great to catch up with so many familiar faces from the SOLIDWORKS community as well as meeting many new people and sharing with them the power of DriveWorks.

Our booth was the perfect place to preview what’s new in our next release, DriveWorks 18, as well as showcase our range of new and updated configurators from our online configurator site driveworkslive.com.

We were all proud to show off the best of DriveWorks and show just how much work the DriveWorks team have put into creating our award-winning software.

With multiple screens displaying our configurator examples, we showed a variety of configurators at once – showing just how easy and versatile DriveWorks software is.

We were also excited to have virtual reality set up on our booth, delegates were interacting with our 3D configurators in VR.

General Sessions

Every morning we joined General Session to hear from the Dassult Systemes team and keynote speakers.

Gian Paolo Bassi, CEO at Dassault Systemes SOLIDWORKS opened General Session on day one, introducing us all to the 3DEXPERIENCEWORKS Platform. He spoke about the importance of how the SOLIDWORKS community has inspired designers and engineers to create amazing products and the mission of the platform was to provide the community with tools to build a better world.

In these sessions, we enjoyed hearing product announcements and learning alot about 3DEXPERIENCE WORKS and what is possible with the platform.

A key theme throughout the week was the importance of community and bringing together people and processes through technology.

Gian Paolo Bassi described how throughout history the efficiency introduced by new technologies resulted in more time and money. As a result, people could dedicate themselves more to think, explore, invent and exchange ideas.

The 3DEXPERIENCE Platform brings together these people and processes, with 3DEXPERIENCE WORKS information on every aspect of a product or process readily available in one place, so you can get more done in less time and have more time to think and create.

Keynote Speakers

Throughout the event, we heard from a mixture of inspiring keynote speakers and industry pioneers showing what can be achieved with technology.

From impressive engineering creating Gravity Industries Jet-Suit to Magic WheelChair bringing communitites together by building costumes for kids in wheelchairs using the power of design.

It was great to learn more about what has been achieved by the amazing engineers and innovators in the SOLIDWORKS Community.

Danielle Boyer

On day three, Danielle Boyer, STEAM Eductor and creator of Every Kid Gets A Robot (EKGAR) took to the main stage to speak about her incredible work.

Danielle shared how she wanted to increase access to affordable STEAM educational materials making products more available for everyone.

Starting off as a project in the FIRST Robotics Competition, the robots have since developed into an easy kit that can be created in SOLIDWORKS, 3D printed and then assembled to create an EKGAR.

Dassult Systems partnered with Danielle Boyer to hold a 3DEXPERIENCE World EKGAR workshop. Attendees assembled 150 Every Kid Gets a Robot kits during the event. With each robot being designed in SOLIDWORKS and costing less than $20, the robots are perfect to provide STEM education to kids of all ages.

DriveWorks Solo Tech Tip: Positioning Form Controls

DriveWorks Solo includes tools to help you quickly position your Form Controls.

Grouping Controls

Grouping Controls are great for controls that you want to keep together on your forms, like a set of dimension controls (Height, Width, Depth).

To Group Controls:

  1. Select two or more controls from the same user form.
  2. Right click on one of the selected controls.
  3. Select Group Controls from the menu.

To Ungroup Controls

  1. Select a group of controls from the user form.
  2. Right click on the group.
  3. Select Ungroup Controls from the menu.

Aligning Form Controls

Aligning Form Controls makes your controls snap to a grid and helps you to quickly make sure they are all placed neatly.

To align two or more form controls, either box select (by click-dragging the form design surface), or control-select each control you wish to align, and then press the relevant alignment button.

The following alignment tools are available:

  • Align Left
  • Align Vertical Centers
  • Align Right
  • Align Horizontal Centers
  • Align Middle
  • Align Bottom
  • Space Evenly Vertically
  • Space Evenly Horizontally

Control Guides
Control guides allow quick and accurate alignment of controls when designing user forms.

Control guides appear when controls are moved on the user form.

Control Guides align to other controls in two ways:

  • Margin Guides – Snap a set distance away from another control.
  • Alignment Guides – Snap to the edges of another control.

Accurate Positioning

Accurate Positioning allows you to position your Form Controls graphically to the pixel.

For fine tuning of control positions the keyboard arrow keys can be used to move the selected control one pixel at a time.

  1. Select a single control or multiple controls to be moved.
  2. Press and hold the Alt key on the keyboard and the arrow key that corresponds to the direction the control is to be moved.
  • Alt + – Move the control(s) 1 pixel up.
  • Alt + – Move the control(s) 1 pixel left.
  • Alt + – Move the control(s) 1 pixel down.
  • Alt + – Move the control(s) 1 pixel right.

Use each Form Controls Layout Properties to ensure consistent positioning

In this example the property that defines a Form Controls Left position has been linked to a Variable.

This Variable can be used in multiple Form Controls Left position property. Updating the Variables value will update the Left position of all the Form Controls it has been applied to.

Before using DriveWorks
we would create 20 quotes in a month, now we can do 20 in a day.
The process in the past was labour intensive as prices need to be calculated each time and
drawings all had to be prepared manually.

– David Martin, Managing Director, Elite Balustrades

In its current state, DriveWorks outputs 245 files, 60 of which are assemblies, 85 are drawings and the rest are parts files. With DriveWorks handling repetitive tasks, our engineers are freed up to focus on customized aspects of our designs, such as the internal cabinets of the vehicle.

Shawn Casebolt, Engineering Lead, PL Custom Body.

There was the need for a time saving process to reduce engineering time, so called Zero Effort Engineering (ZEE). When implementing DriveWorks Pro, our target for order-engineering was to go back from 2 hours to 15 minutes. This target has been achieved with DriveWorks.

– Rob Beffers, Manager Integrated Process Control, Rademaker BV

We implemented DriveWorks Pro and saw a 55-minute process go down to 30 minutes. The benefits of Design Automation are very, very real.

Dave Mandl, New Product Development Engineer,
S辿ura

At NGI, my main challenge is to create documents
for a lot of parts, and this has proven pretty
difficult to do
without DriveWorks
.

– Tomas Hecht Olsen,
R&D Manager,
NGI A/S

One consistent software package that simplifies quoting and ordering and is easy to use, for our in-house customer service and our external distributors.

– Terry McGowan, President and CEO at Thordon Bearings

We truly hope and believe DriveWorks will generate
an extremely short
pay-back
in getting
Clear Vision Cooling off the ground

– Jurnjan van den Bremer, Commercial Direction, Clear Vision Cooling
