International Women’s Day – Nadia Shea

International Women’s Day 2022

International Women’s Day (IWD), celebrated annually on 8th March, is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women all around the world. International women’s day has been celebrated for well over a century, with the first one starting in 1911.

This day is one of the most important days of the year to celebrate women’s achievements, raise awareness about women’s equality, and share stories of inspiring women.

Join us in celebrating just some of the inspirational women in our community and the empowering work they do for women everywhere.

Nadia Shea

Technical Manager, Customer Support/Success/Experience, MLC CAD Systems

Nadia is currently working as the Technical Manager at MLC CAD Systems and has been with them since 2008.

Currently, Nadia serves in the role of Technical Manager, supporting technical teams and communicating daily with designers and manufacturers. Her professional background ranges from the computer gaming industry, to welding, to servicing all products in the SOLIDWORKS portfolio.

Her passion for engineering and innovating is shown with her hands-on approach to teaching and enjoyment of seeing innovation come to life.

“Forge your own path. Don’t worry about what others will think or how hard it will be. If you follow your gut or heart (as long as it’s yourself), you will find your way and, most likely, find your community or support along the way.”

Where did your initial interest in STEM come from?

“I may be aging myself, but it was not called STEM when I was in high school. I attended a magnet middle and high school in my youth, which emphasized arts and sciences.”

What is your current role/involvement in STEM?

“I am currently a technical manager for a company that sells CAD, CAM, and 3D printers. I support the technical teams on all sides, so I communicate daily with designers and manufacturers.”

“I also occasionally support the local high school robotics. Go FRC2468 and FRC2687!”

Tell us a bit about your background and how you ended up in this role

“That is a long story and may bore you. I’ll give you a tempting teaser, though. It all started with me working on set with the Quentin Tarantino movie Death Proof.”

What is your favourite thing about working in STEM?

“This is a two-part answer. I appreciate the practical application and hands-on approach to teaching concepts with education. With work, I love seeing the application results and see innovation come to life.”

What advice would you give to young women interested in pursuing a career in STEM?

“At the risk of violating copyright laws – Just Do It!”

What is the most important piece of advice you have been given?

“Forge your own path. Don’t worry about what others will think or how hard it will be. If you follow your gut or heart (as long as it’s yourself), you will find your way and, most likely, find your community or support along the way.”

Who or what inspires you?

“Right now, I’m following Mark Robert and TwoSetViolin on YouTube. I appreciate those who are serious about the craft but, at the same time, enjoy it! I look for inspiration and lessons everywhere.”
