Kögl enable 24/7 custom configuration with DriveWorks

Configure, design, sell, and manufacture custom products faster

DriveWorks is used by manufacturers in countries all over the world. DriveWorks design automation3D product configurator, and CPQ solutions enable manufacturers to automate complex engineering tasks, maintain quality standards, and deliver customized products efficiently. KÖGL GmbH use DriveWorks to enable 24/7 custom configuration and automatically generate custom CAD manufacturing data.

The challenges

KÖGL GmbH, based in Germany, has been developing custom vehicle and workplace equipment for professional use across various industries since 1964. Their portfolio includes industrial equipment as well as vehicle outfitting for small service providers.

Before DriveWorks, KÖGL processed custom orders as an individually planned piece of equipment in the design department, created a new order, and then redesigned it. This added additional cost and led to delays in production and delivery. They wanted to offer in-house CAD designs to customers at any time and provide new versions of existing products more quickly and efficiently.

The solutions

KÖGL used DriveWorks technology to build an online product configurator, KALEXA. KALEXA gives customers 24/7 online access to all solutions and the ability to create new variants.

In DriveWorks, their SOLIDWORKS® CAD models are linked to a set of rules. These CAD models are master models and serve as the basis for possible variations. Parameters such as length, width, and height are defined in the DriveWorks rule set.

This set of rules is limited by value ranges based on feasibility. The customer is therefore only offered combinations that can be realistically implemented. The new variants are generated live, as soon as the customer selects and configures their product via KALEXA. This is always based on the master models from SOLIDWORKS. The CAD data is generated automatically in the background, without the need for any designer involvement. Simultaneously, the order is created, recorded in the ERP system, and transferred to production. The customer receives a detailed data sheet with a drawing for their order and an order confirmation.

Using DriveWorks reduces the pressure on KÖGL’s design engineers, but also on sales, work preparation, and production. Processes are perfectly coordinated and seamlessly integrated, saving valuable resources that KÖGL can then use for new developments.

Summary of benefits achieved with DriveWorks

  1. Online configuration available for customers 24/7
  2. Guaranteed production feasibility
  3. Streamlined and integrated processes
  4. Reduced time pressure across design, sales, work prep, and production
  5. More time for new product development

How DriveWorks makes a difference for other industries

Manufacturers producing custom goods often face common challenges. Complex configurations don’t fit easily into traditional manufacturing processes originally set up for off-the-shelf products. This can lead to bottlenecks, delays, and inefficient processes.
