SOLIDWORKS User Groups

There are SOLIDWORKS User Groups (SWUG) all over the world. In the UK there are just two groups, one in London and one in the North of England.

SWUG meetings are set up by users, for users.

The aim of the meetings is for attendees to learn, share ideas, get inspired and make better connections amongst a network of local SOLIDWORKS users.

The SOLIDWORKS User Group based in the North of England, UK SWUG NW are returning to Warrington for the 4th year in a row to host their Christmas meeting.

Why Warrington?

Warrington is a town with a deep industrial heritage and there is still a lot of industry in the town today. Many manufacturers in the area will use the SOLIDWORKS 3D CAD package and this is a great opportunity for those users to get to know each other.

The theme of the meeting on the 3rd of December is the Importance of SOLIDWORKS in the Northern Powerhouse.

Ian Pilkington, Strategic Business Development Manager at SOLIDWORKS presents at last December’s meeting.

Local wire manufacturer, Locker Group, will be presenting at the meeting about how they use SOLIDWORKS.

Solid Solutions, a local SOLIDWORKS reseller, who provide training and support for the software, will be supporting the meeting and presenting about the new features that have been added in the latest software release, SOLIDWORKS 2019.

There will also be a presentation about Gillettes personalised 3D printed razor handles to explore how SOLIDWORKS works with 3D printing, a technology that is growing rapidly.

The meeting is free to attend, food and refreshments are provided and there will also be a Christmas quiz with great prizes to be won.

Where and When?

Monday, 3rd December, 5pm-8pm at DriveWorks, The Barley Store, Laskey Lane, Thelwall, WA4 2TF.

DriveWorks Ltd are providing the meeting space free of charge to encourage local SOLIDWORKS users to get together, learn and help each other.

DriveWorks is a SOLIDWORKS Gold Partner product and has been working alongside SOLIDWORKS for over 18 years. DriveWorks provide free design automation software, DriveWorksXpress, to help SOLIDWORKS engineers work smarter.

Who Can Attend?

Glen Smith, CEO of DriveWorks Ltd presents at last year December’s meeting.

Anyone who uses SOLIDWORKS can attend. Whether youre a student or a professional, come along to meet other users, learn and maybe even win a prize!

As DriveWorks 16 SP2 was released last week, Mike Loftus, Technical Specialist at DriveWorks caught up with our longest serving member of the team, Ian Yates to get his opinion on the new features in this latest service pack.

DriveWorks 16 SP2

This service pack continues our DriveWorks journey from creating the first automated rules-based SOLIDWORKS designs to full company integration and web technology, pushing the boundaries even further with DriveWorks 16. 16 SP2 contains great new features, functions and enhancements. Lots of tools for working smart and creating spectacular configurators.

To explain some of these and also to gain his opinion on how DriveWorks has changed with design, manufacturing and company trends over the years, I have asked long-term team member and part of the DriveWorks foundations, Ian Yates for his thoughts.

So, getting to some of the new features and enhancements for SP2, I have heard that your favourite is a new information tip?

Yes. This will really help new users and to be honest, sometimes experienced users can forget to do this too.”

“So we have our Group created and have added a model or two, created a form and workflow. Next, we want to add some model rules and nothing appears. Good news is we now have an Information Tip that pops up and informs us that we need to add the models to the rules. Even better, if you click the message it takes you to our help files and explains how to capture models.”

In DriveWorks 16 SP1, Ambient Occlusion was added to DriveWorks 3D. Im a visual person so a big fan. Have you seen the new 3D enhancements in SP2?

I have yes. DriveWorks 3D is one element of our software to benefit greatly in DriveWorks 16. We saw added features and enhancements to do with lighting, adding and managing cameras and textures.”

“SP1 included Ambient Occlusion and now in SP2, you have the ability to add bloom to your Drive3D files and create a vignette effect. These are both camera effects that can be added to a 3D Document.”

“Bloom is an effect where light from a bright source, appears as a halo spreading into surrounding areas on a model. I think this effect is well illustrated in the bulb image.”

“Vignette simulates the edge darkening in real-world camera lenses creating a frame. It is an artistic effect to draw focus to the centre of an image, so right up your street.”

“Bloom and Vignette both have properties to fine-tune the effects. To view these remember you must select Preview Mode.”

“A third enhancement for DriveWorks 3D allows you to show different combinations of images and progress bar as your 3D files are loading into the browser.”

“Sometimes 3D documents are quite detailed and take a few seconds to load, so you can use this new combination to make for a better user experience.

There are a few enhancements to help with integrating with web services.

Yesthere are some new enhancements that will definitely help when connecting to Web Services.”

“Often these web services need a time count in seconds from a UTC (Coordinated Universal Time), UnixEpoch() will do this.”

“To translate time zones and establish local client time we have the function NowUtc().”

“We also have a new function to decode URL strings for bi-directional communication, UrlDecode() and can now compute SHA256 hash values for authentication, HashSHA256.

An example of DriveWorks integrating with Parcel Monkey, an online courier broker.
Try the example in the DriveWorks Integration Tech Stack.

I know we have some new functions in SP2 and we have a new Sp prefix to categorize a Specification category.

Yes these might be useful in CPQ or as an Admin dashboard to report a job status or percentage of completion.”

“SpGetCurrentState allows you to see what state an existing specification is up to.”

“SpGetState allows you to see who has security permissions for a named state of a particular specification.”

“SpGetStates shows the available states for a current project, could be used to find out a percentage of job completion.”

“To supplement the function FsGetFiles we now have a new function TableSortByDate so we can get the files in date order and sort based on this too.

Finally we have an enhancement to Pack and Go.

This is another really useful enhancement to a great feature.”

“We have always had the ability to create a configuration file for Pack and Go that remembers previous selections. If a new part or subassembly is added the Pack and Go configuration file will now recognise the change and automatically add the files.”

“These improvements are all documented in our help files and linked to appropriate additional resources as I mentioned earlier.

DriveWorks Pro Online Help File

As DriveWorks 16 SP2 was released last week, Mike Loftus, Technical Specialist at DriveWorks caught up with our longest serving member of the team, Ian Yates to get his opinion on how DriveWorks has changed as a product and as a company, our vast technical documentation, the great enhancements made in DriveWorks 16 and using DriveWorks alongside SOLIDWORKS.

Firstly, Ian, how much do you feel DriveWorks has changed both as a company and as a product over the years?

Taking a look around at all the premises at our headquarters that we now have, along with the departments and members of staff, that is a huge change from the small office we operated out of when we first moved here.”

“The company has grown extensively.”

“When I joined DriveWorks back in 2001, I went out on the road with resellers showing demos of DriveWorks.”

“We now have lots of customers who have a diverse range of products, our customers come from many different countries and we provide support to the resellers we have worldwide. They are now technically equipped with lots of resources that we have provided.”

“Our staff and company structure mean we can exceed expectations and provide for change.”

“Our product has changed massively too. Becoming a SOLIDWORKS Gold partner and DriveWorksXpress being included with SOLIDWORKS gave designers and engineers a glimpse of how repetitive tasks could be automated, an important consideration for design intent.”

“Designing our own rules engine in DriveWorks 6 gave us much more possibilities which has extended to the full multi-purpose configurator that DriveWorks Pro has become.”

“I think that DriveWorks Solo filled a gap so we now have a product for every Design and Manufacturing company which is completely scalable as companies want to do more.

You provide documentation to support customers and resellers. Our own staff use the same resources for internal training.

This must be something you are proud of?

Yes. Glen always wanted good online help files as part of our commitment to helping others to help themselves.”

“We have adapted our help files over time as web and browser technology has improved. Our system now is well organised, it has to be, we link our help files to so many other resources such as tips and tricks, whats new blogs, videos and webinars etc.”

“I can work on our help files offline then automatically update online as new functionality goes live. All nice and slick and up-to-date and yes itprovides internal training too”

You trained me in DriveWorks way back in 2002 and I have used it in industry and as a SOLIDWORKS trainer. To me, DriveWorks 16 is packed full of tools to cater for so many departments found in every company, everyone can make their mark on the design of a fantastic configurator.

A big leap forward would you say?

Yes absolutely.”

“DriveWorks 16 lets everyone make good use of the latest web technology, data integration, security, super creative forms and has further enhanced our 3D capabilities which look fantastic and continue to be developed through some new goodies in our service packs.”

“We have redesigned some of the interfaces for workflow, our spec macros are easier to understand which makes them easier to change and troubleshoot.”

“This massively aids our CPQ capabilities and everything is tested using our internal Mass Gen project which includes testing with versions of SOLIDWORKS.”

SOLIDWORKS is important to me. What changes have you seen in DriveWorks to support the ever-changing Design and Manufacturing techniques specifically for SOLIDWORKS users?

Starting with DriveWorks 14 we started to introduce Model Generation Tasks which means that as DriveWorks is generating a model, it can now get SOLIDWORKS to do stuff too as the model is created. This might be creating a view and rendering the model in that view. Creating new custom properties and adding to Bills of Materials. Auto ballooning, deleting dangling dimensions or even mating components in an assembly. These tasks have now extended to creating CAM data including GCode, MBD Data in 3D PDFs as well as integrating with SOLIDWORKS PDM Pro.”

“A lot of our new functionality allows the creation and movement of data to create Bills of Materials by various means for different departmental needs. Add that to the ability to integrate with live data, such as current steel prices etc, shows how aware we are of current design and manufacturing methods and also industry standards.

DriveWorks 16 SP2 was released on November 14th, 2018 and is available to download from the DriveWorks Community.

In DriveWorks 16 we built on our extensive Design Automation capabilities, greatly enhanced our 3D capabilities and made sure DriveWorks is positioned as a powerful configurator and CPQ solution company-wide for manufacturing companies.

Our developers have added some new features and updated code which has been tested rigorously by our tech team. SP2 is now available to download from the DriveWorks Community.

What’s New?

Updates to 3D

We’ve added Bloom and Vignette 3D effects to enhance photorealism on 3D models.

Bloom is an optical effect where light from a bright source, such as a glint, appears to spread into surrounding objects.

Vignette is an effect that simulates the darkening in real-world camera lenses.

We’ve also added 3D Preview Control Loading Overlay, a feature that allows you to customize the loading overlay, displayed when a 3D file is being loaded.

Data Management

The ability to automatically select all components from the included projects has been added.

When subsequent tasks are run using a configuration file, DriveWorks remembers your choices.

The components step can now be filtered to show the components based on the project they are used in.

New Functions

New Specification functions added include:

  • SpGetCurrentState – retrieve information about the current State of a specification.
  • SpGetState – retrieve information about any State in a specification.
  • SpGetStates – retrieve information about all the States in a specification.

A new Table function allows a table to be sorted on a date field, TableSortByDate.

The following functions have been added to assist with web service communication:

Model Rules Info Tips

Info tips appear at the top of the Model Rules window when either:

  • No models have been captured to the group

Or

  • No component sets have been added to the project

Clicking on the info tip will take you to the relevant section in the help file.

In a peaceful village on the outskirts of Warrington, a software company is making a big noise in the technology industry. Henry Carpenter, from Cheshire Business Magazine, catches up with the founders of DriveWorks and learns more about a local business which has a truly global reach.

From the outside, the DriveWorks headquarters dont even hint at the hi-tech operation thats in action behind the closed doors.

The business is set in a series of converted barns in Thelwall, a quiet village on the north eastern fringes of Warrington. Its a tranquil spot and the handily-placed M6 is visible, but far enough away as not to ruin the peace.

To those with more than a passing knowledge of digital technology, a verbal explanation of the capabilities of DriveWorks is easy to grasp. One description is that DriveWorks is design automation and sales configurator software for companies that design and manufacture industrial products. Or, more simplistically, DriveWorks software enables companies to build their own online configurators, that automatically create all of the data to both sell and manufacture custom products.

DriveWorks’ Co-Founders – Glen Smith and Maria Sarkar.

For the layman to get an even more accurate understanding of the product which has elevated this Cheshire firm to its undoubted status as a market leader, a demonstration works better than words.Thankfully, Glen Smith, CEO of DriveWorks, is happy to oblige. Glen logs on to his laptop and opens a browser to display a contemporary looking website.

On screen is a 3D framework of a trailer, the sort we see on the back of a lorry. We can put a couple of hinged doors on the back, or maybe a roller shutter, explains Glen, clicking away with his mouse as the rear of the trailer is transformed before our eyes.

Lets change the colour to city blue, he says, pointing the arrow to a palette on the site. And we can easily add steel sidebars, which he does with another simple click. The 3D model rotates, Glen zooms in and out and we get a real sense of what is being designed. All the while, there is a value figure on the bottom right of the screen, which Glen explains is the price of the trailer which changes and updates in real time according to the selections he makes.

This unique software is sold via a network of over 100 resellers across the world.

While Glen is the technical brains behind DriveWorks, Maria Sarkar, Vice President, oversees the commercial and marketing side of the operation. Maria takes obvious pride in conducting a tour around the site, making introductions to the various departments housed in several former barns, some of which are kitted to the gunnels with screens, standup desks and a mass of technological paraphernalia.

While the skill sets across the business clearly vary, there is a strong sense of family running through the whole operation; sofas, a beer fridge, games consoles. . . a sense of relaxed recreation sits alongside the intense work atmosphere at DriveWorks.

This is a firm where individual and collective responsibility is endorsed by the management. So, its easy to see why Marias mood is so bright. She and DriveWorks have come a long way in a relatively short space of time.

Marias first job was on a graduate training scheme with British Rail, before going on to work at an advertising agency in London.

I moved to Cheshire in 1996 and set up my own sales and marketing agency, she recalls. One of my first clients was a SOLIDWORKS reseller. SOLIDWORKS is a market leading, 3D computer-aided design software package, with millions of users across the globe.

Glen, who had already set up a company automating production plants, joined the same reseller in 1999. He decided to write an automation programme which he wanted to take to market. He talked to me about it and that was the start of DriveWorks we set up the company in 2001. A big early step in our development was in 2002 when we become a SOLIDWORKS Gold Partner and another important date in our timeline was in 2005 when we moved to Thelwall.

The first few years involved working hard for a few customers. We were pretty hand to mouth, according to Glen but then they secured their first customer in the form of West Midlands-based Whale Tankers.

Maria takes up the story again: We started exhibiting at reseller events around the world, mostly in the US, and we were getting SOLIDWORKS excited about our software. They liked it so much that in 2008, they embedded our entry-level product, DriveWorksXpress, into their software. Everyone who has access to a licence of SOLIDWORKS can use DriveWorksXpress for free!

The figures tell at least part of the story. The firm has seen 20% growth year on year over the last 14 years entirely organically through profit alone. As the company has grown, so has theworkforce. There are now 45 members of staff at DriveWorks. There has always been an ethos of taking on placements and university leavers, many of whom go on to stay with the firm.

The end users of the various DriveWorks packages are many and varied.

In 2016 I know there were more than 1,000 unique companies using our products, and weve added many more since, says Maria. They are mainly from the engineering and manufacturing sectors. DriveWorks has been used to configure architectural and industrial components, windows, heating and ventilation elements, sheds . . . its a long list.

As an individual case study, take Rademaker, which makes industrial bakery equipment in the Netherlands. DriveWorks software has enabled them to improve efficiency and reduce engineering time by 30% across several divisions of the organisation.

We help our clients to help themselves, explains Maria. Our training and education programmes teach companies and students how to automate and become more successful. We give them the skills which will help them in their industry.

So, whats next for DriveWorks?

For starters, contingency plans are inplace for what Brexit might or might not bring.

Some 80% of our revenue comes from selling our software overseas so we are doing our bit for UK PLC and keeping a watchful eye but in reality, we dont know what is going to happen, Maria continues.

We have set up a subsidiary in the US and are considering a subsidiary in Europe. One thing we do know is that our software can certainly help British manufacturing companies take their products global by selling digitallyanywhere, through a DriveWorks configurator and online presence.

At the moment we are doing a lot of work on 3D visualisation, specifically relating to augmented reality and virtual reality, whereby we set up the configuration of a design and watch it being made.Hardware and the online world are changing all the time. We adapt, embrace and exploit those changes and turn them in to opportunities to deliver value-added software and benefits to our customers.”

We have only scratched the surface.

When?
8:30am – 10:30am.
Wednesday 7th November 2018.

Where?
The Base, Dallam Lane, Warrington, WA2 7NG.

Tomorrow Maria Sarkar, VP and Co-Founder of DriveWorks, is attending the launch of the Technology in Business Forumby Warrington & Co!
